World Cup 2026: Asamoah Gyan hails Benjamin Asare after Ghana’s draw against England
Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has praised goalkeeper Benjamin Asare after his outstanding performance in the Black Stars’ goalless draw against England in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Asare played a decisive role in Carlos Queiroz’s side earning a valuable point in Foxborough, Massachusetts, producing several important saves to keep England at bay.
Crucial saves deny England
The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper was at the heart of Ghana’s defensive resilience, most notably making a brilliant late save to deny England captain Harry Kane.
Moments later, Ghana were spared again when Nico O’Reilly’s header struck the crossbar, further highlighting Asare’s importance in keeping the score level.
Gyan praises composure and reliability
Speaking after the match, Gyan praised the goalkeeper’s calmness and positional awareness, describing him as a key figure for the national team.
“Benjamin Asare is very composed. Wherever he is, you can see the ball comes there,” Gyan said.
The former Ghana captain also highlighted Asare’s consistency during the World Cup qualifying campaign, insisting his performances have been vital to Ghana’s progress.
“He kept Ghana alive so many times in the qualifiers,” he added.
Rising influence at the World Cup
Asare was drafted into the starting role after replacing the injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi during Ghana’s opening win over Panama, and he has since taken full advantage of his opportunity on the global stage.
His performances have helped Ghana secure back-to-back clean sheets at the tournament, with the Black Stars now among a select group yet to concede a goal.
Ghana’s growing confidence ahead of Croatia clash
Following a 1-0 win over Panama and a draw against England, Ghana head into their final Group L fixture against Croatia in a strong position to reach the knockout stage.
With confidence growing and momentum building, Asare’s form could prove decisive in determining how far the Black Stars go in the competition.
