World Cup 2026: Senegal coach Pape Thiaw refuses to give up on qualification despite back-to-back defeats
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw says the Teranga Lions will continue fighting for qualification despite suffering back-to-back defeats at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Senegal’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage suffered another major blow after a painful 3-2 loss to Norway in their second Group I match. The defeat followed their 3-1 opening loss against France, leaving the African side with no points after two games.
The Teranga Lions produced an improved display against Norway and showed great determination throughout the contest, but defensive mistakes once again proved costly as they slipped to another defeat.
Despite the disappointing situation, Thiaw insists Senegal’s World Cup campaign is still alive ahead of their decisive final group game against Iraq.
“They know it’s not over yet. Everything can come down to the final matchday,” the Senegal coach said after the game.
“It’s a defeat, we must accept it and move forward. We know there is one match left, we must give it our absolute all and hope.”
Senegal now face a difficult challenge to progress from Group I, with qualification no longer entirely in their own hands. Victory against Iraq in the final round of matches will be essential, while the Teranga Lions will also need favourable results elsewhere.
Thiaw, however, remains determined to keep his players motivated as they attempt to rescue their campaign and avoid an early exit from the tournament.
The former Senegal international believes his team still has the quality and fighting spirit to end the group stage on a positive note despite the pressure surrounding the squad after consecutive defeats.
