World Cup 2026: We need to prepare tactically well for South Africa test – South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo
South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo has offered a measured assessment of South Africa ahead of their final Group A encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also reflecting on his side’s narrow setback against Mexico.
The Koreans missed the opportunity to secure qualification for the Round of 32 on Thursday after falling 1-0 to the co-hosts in a tightly contested match.
The decisive moment came shortly after the restart when goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu’s error gifted Mexico the only goal of the game.
Speaking ahead of next week’s meeting with South Africa, Hong acknowledged the threat posed by their opponents.
“South Africa is a team with good speed,” he told reporters.
“We need to prepare tactically well.”
Kim, who was at fault for the decisive goal, accepted responsibility for the mistake but stressed the harsh reality of his position.
“This is the life of a goalkeeper. You can play well, but you will ultimately be judged by the one you give up,” he was quoted as saying by The Korea Herald.
“I should have focused better in that situation. When the ball went up in the air, I tried to play it safe, but things went wrong there.”
