World Cup 2026: I’m fit and raring to go against Ghana – Declan Rice

Declan Rice has eased fears over his availability ahead of England’s World Cup meeting with Ghana on Tuesday night, insisting he is fully fit after a second-half injury scare in the opening win over Croatia.

The Arsenal midfielder was withdrawn after appearing to struggle with discomfort in his hamstring and lower back, triggering concern within the England camp given his importance to the team’s midfield structure. The incident briefly raised doubts about his readiness for the tournament’s early stages.

Rice, however, moved to reassure supporters and staff that the issue was precautionary.

“Yes, I’m ready. I’m fit and raring to go. I think it was a smart decision (to take me off). I was feeling a little bit of neural pain in my hamstring which I was managing after Christmas with Arsenal for a very long time. Obviously, not a lot of people would’ve known, it was all behind the scenes stuff.”

The midfielder’s explanation is expected to calm nerves as England prepare for a demanding fixture schedule.

Smart management and recovery

Rice also underlined that the decision to remove him late in the Croatia match was rooted in caution, particularly given the physical demands of closing stages in high-intensity games.

He stressed that the last phase of matches often carries the greatest risk for muscle-related setbacks, especially for players already carrying minor issues.

“It was a smart decision,” Rice added. “The last 20 minutes is where you probably pick up most injuries. That last 20 minutes is where you really feel your body going through it. The last few days I’ve felt really, really good.”

Saka optimism boosts England outlook

Attention has also turned to Bukayo Saka, who continues his recovery from an Achilles issue but remains part of England’s long-term plans. Rice expressed confidence that the winger is being managed appropriately and can still play a major role in the competition.

“One hundred per cent, yes. It’s been really good the way we’ve been managing him.

“The amount of football he’s played, I’ve seen him at Arsenal with this Achilles problem he’s got I think we’re managing him the right way. You don’t want to put him in straight away now and put him at risk.”

With both players edging towards full readiness, England head into the Ghana encounter as strong favourites, with confidence high in their bid to secure early progression in the tournament.
