Cameroon defender Olivier Mbaizo parts ways with Philadelphia Union after eight years

Cameroon defender Olivier Mbaizo has officially brought his long association with Philadelphia Union to an end after spending eight seasons with the Major League Soccer club.

The 28-year-old right-back is now set to explore new opportunities after the Union decided against extending his stay beyond the expiration of his current contract.

Mbaizo joined Philadelphia Union in 2018 and went on to become an important member of the squad, earning a reputation as a reliable and energetic presence on the right side of defence.

Despite his contributions over the years, the club has opted not to offer the Cameroonian international a new deal, meaning his time in Philadelphia has come to a close.

During his eight-year stint, Mbaizo made 156 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the club’s most experienced defenders. In addition to his defensive duties, he also contributed going forward, registering 13 assists and regularly supporting attacks down the flank.

His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in both his career and the club’s recent history. Having spent the majority of his professional career in the United States, Mbaizo leaves with a wealth of experience gained in Major League Soccer and continental competitions.

The former Union defender has also represented Cameroon at international level, adding further value to his profile as he searches for his next destination.

With his contract set to expire on 31 December 2026 and no renewal forthcoming, Mbaizo now enters the market as an experienced free agent. His track record, international experience and versatility are expected to attract interest from clubs both within and outside North America.
