Vladimir Petkovic prepares for Algeria's World Cup opener

Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic will face the media on Monday as preparations intensify for the Desert Foxes’ opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Argentina in Kansas City.

The press conference comes less than 48 hours before Algeria’s highly anticipated return to football’s biggest stage, ending a 12-year absence from the tournament.

The North African side will begin its campaign against the reigning world champions in a match scheduled for Wednesday at 02:00 Algerian time, corresponding to Tuesday evening local time in the United States.

Petkovic is expected to discuss the significance of the fixture, his team’s ambitions for the tournament and the challenge of facing one of the strongest national teams in world football.

The match represents an important milestone for Algeria, who secured qualification under the leadership of the Bosnian coach after he was appointed in February 2024.

Since taking charge, Petkovic has overseen a successful qualification campaign, guiding the Desert Foxes through eight of their ten qualifying matches.

During that period, Algeria recorded six victories, one draw and one defeat, earning a place at the World Cup after missing the previous editions.

The federation recently rewarded the coach’s work by extending his contract until 2028, reinforcing confidence in the direction of the national team project.

Beyond the significance of Algeria’s return to the tournament, the match will also mark Petkovic’s second appearance at a World Cup as a national team coach. His previous experience came with Switzerland, whom he led to the Round of 16 during the 2018 tournament in Russia.

The encounter against Argentina also carries a personal dimension for the Algeria manager.

Petkovic will come up against Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, a familiar figure from his time in Italian football. Scaloni played under Petkovic during their shared spell at Lazio, creating an interesting subplot ahead of the Group-stage clash.

The Algeria coach’s media appearance is scheduled for Monday evening and will offer one of the final opportunities to assess the mood within the camp before the tournament begins.

Attention will then quickly shift to preparations on the pitch. A mixed-zone session is expected to take place before Algeria’s final training session ahead of the match, allowing players and staff to deliver their last messages before facing Argentina.

With anticipation growing among supporters, all eyes will now be on Petkovic as he outlines Algeria’s approach to one of the most demanding opening fixtures of the World Cup and the team’s long-awaited return to the global stage.
