World Cup 2026: Fae hails Ivory Coast resilience after nervy opening win over Ecuador
Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae praised his players for overcoming early nerves as they edged Ecuador 1–0 in a tense Group stage opener on Sunday night, a result built on discipline, patience and a strong second-half response.
The Elephants, making their latest World Cup appearance, survived a difficult first half in which they were repeatedly tested, with Ecuador twice striking the woodwork and coming close to taking control of the match.
Fae admitted his side struggled to settle in the opening stages, with tension clearly affecting their rhythm and decision-making.
“The players were a bit on edge. It was a first World Cup for everyone, so there was a bit of tension. They were afraid to take risks,” said Fae, who guided the Elephants to an Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil two years ago.
Despite the shaky start, Ivory Coast weathered the pressure and gradually grew into the contest, before eventually finding the breakthrough that secured all three points. Fae said the team’s ability to absorb pressure was crucial to the outcome.
“We managed to hold on and dig in,” he added.
The coach noted a marked improvement after the break, with his side showing greater control and attacking intent as they began to assert themselves against the South American opponents.
“In the second half we were a lot more focused… and we have attacking players who can make the difference at any moment.”
The result ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run stretching back to September, underlining the significance of the victory for the West African side.
The defeat will be a bitter setback for Ecuador, who had entered the tournament with strong momentum and high expectations.
For Ivory Coast, however, the win provides an important platform as they continue their Group campaign. They now turn their attention to a stern test against Germany, a fixture that is expected to further define their progression hopes.
