Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed during an international football match

Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed has been selected to officiate Germany’s opening Group E match against Curaçao at the 2026 World Cup, further highlighting the growing presence of African officials at football’s biggest tournament.

The match, scheduled for Sunday at 5:00 PM GMT at Houston Stadium, will see the experienced referee lead an officiating team largely made up of Moroccan officials.

Jayed’s appointment places him in charge of one of the early fixtures of the tournament, with Germany and Curaçao set to begin their respective World Cup campaigns in a match expected to feature a highly competitive atmosphere.

FIFA’s Referees Committee has entrusted the Moroccan official with responsibility for overseeing the encounter, reflecting confidence in his experience and performances at both continental and international levels.

Moroccan officials take centre stage

Jayed will be assisted by fellow Moroccans Zakaria Brinsi and Mostafa Akarkad, completing an all-Moroccan on-field refereeing trio for the Group E fixture.

The wider officiating team also includes South African officials Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela.

Tom will serve as the fourth official, while Siwela has been appointed reserve assistant referee.

Video review responsibilities have also been allocated to a Moroccan official. Hamza El-Fariq will oversee the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system during the match.

He will be supported by assistant VAR officials Nicolas Gallo and Shaun Evans, who will assist with the review of incidents requiring technological intervention.

The team will be responsible for managing all key decisions throughout the game, including offsides, potential penalty incidents and other situations requiring review.

Germany and Curaçao begin Group E campaign

Germany enter the fixture looking to make a positive start to their World Cup journey, while Curaçao will be aiming to produce a strong performance against one of international football’s most established nations.

As with every opening group-stage match, the result could play an important role in shaping the direction of both teams’ campaigns.

The encounter is expected to provide an early test for the officiating team, with the physical and competitive nature of World Cup matches often placing referees under intense scrutiny.

Recognition for one of Africa’s leading referees

Jayed is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most experienced officials and has built a reputation through his performances in major competitions.

Over the years, he has officiated at high-level tournaments in Africa, including the Africa Cup of Nations, while also gaining experience on the international stage.

His reputation has been built on consistency, discipline and decision-making, qualities that have helped establish him among Africa’s leading referees.

FIFA confidence in Moroccan refereeing

The appointment is also seen as recognition of the growing reputation of Moroccan refereeing within world football.

With several Moroccan officials involved in the match, the selection underlines FIFA’s confidence in the country’s refereeing standards and its ability to provide officials capable of handling matches at the highest level.

As Germany and Curaçao prepare to meet in Houston, attention will naturally focus on the players.

However, Jayed and his officiating team will also carry significant responsibility as they oversee one of the tournament’s opening Group E contests.
