World Cup 2026: Somalia condemns US entry denial of referee Omar Artan
The Somali government has expressed disappointment over the United States’ decision to deny entry to Somali referee Omar Artan ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a press release issued by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on June 10, 2026, the government described the decision as regrettable, highlighting Artan’s status as one of the country’s most respected sporting figures.
Artan, who was named CAF Referee of the Year in 2025, has become a symbol of national pride through his achievements on the international stage. Somali authorities revealed that they engaged in diplomatic efforts with relevant officials in support of his travel, but those attempts were ultimately unsuccessful.
Despite the setback, the government praised Artan’s accomplishments and his positive influence on young Somalis, noting that his career demonstrates how talent, dedication, and perseverance can lead to global success.
The statement confirmed that Artan has safely returned to Somalia and will continue carrying out his national and international duties with the professionalism that has defined his career.
Somalia also thanked countries, institutions, sports organizations, and individuals who showed solidarity during the period and pledged to continue seeking clarification on the matter while protecting the rights and dignity of its citizens.
