Divock Origi announces retirement from football
After 371 senior appearances, 70 goals and spells across five clubs, Divock Origi has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31, closing a career defined by extraordinary highs and a sharp late downturn.
Once a cult hero at Liverpool F.C., the Belgian striker steps away after a prolonged spell away from competitive action and the termination of his contract at A.C. Milan in late 2025.
End of the road after a stalled final chapter
Origi’s decision arrives after a difficult final stretch in which opportunities became increasingly scarce. He managed just 58 appearances across the last four years and had not featured for more than 600 days before his exit from Milan.
Once viewed as a dependable squad option at elite level, his career gradually drifted away from the spotlight following his departure from Anfield in 2022, marking the start of a steady decline in game time and influence.
Liverpool glory and unforgettable moments
It was at Liverpool where Origi cemented his legacy. Over seven seasons, he contributed to a period of sustained success under Jürgen Klopp, collecting the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.
His name remains etched in Anfield folklore, particularly for decisive goals in key European nights, most famously the 2019 semi-final comeback against Barcelona. Those moments ensured his status as one of the club’s most unlikely but cherished match-winners.
Sharp decline after leaving Anfield
The contrast after leaving Liverpool was stark. Moves abroad failed to reignite his trajectory, with limited impact in Italy and reduced involvement at club level. Injuries, competition for places and inconsistent form combined to blunt his once-explosive influence.
By the time his contract was terminated at Milan, Origi had already been absent from top-level rhythm for an extended period, leaving his future uncertain.
A message of gratitude and an open next chapter
Announcing his retirement on social media, Origi struck a reflective tone. “My purpose in the game is fulfilled,” he wrote on X. “I lived out my childhood dreams, played on the biggest stages, won the biggest trophies. Grateful to God for all of it.
“To all my fans, the clubs, my teammates and my family: this will forever be ours. Thank you. The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling. More of the journey to come.
“Love, Divock Origi.”
His reference to “more of the journey” has already fuelled speculation over a possible transition into coaching, mentoring or media work, leaving open the possibility that his influence on the game may continue in a different form.
