CAF Champions League: Al Hilal Omdurman face qualification play-off despite league triumph in Rwanda
Sudan’s football giants Al Hilal Omdurman find themselves in an unusual position after securing the Premier League title in Rwanda, yet still falling short of automatic qualification for next season’s CAF Champions League.
Despite their domestic success abroad, the club must now return home to compete in a mini-league tournament that will determine which Sudanese sides represent the country in next season’s CAF interclub competitions.
The system is linked to Sudan’s current standing in the CAF five-year ranking, where the nation sits among the top 12 associations.
This ranking grants Sudan two slots in the CAF Champions League and two in the CAF Confederation Cup, but final selection of participating clubs is decided through a national qualification process rather than direct league entry.
This means Al Hilal, despite lifting the league title in Rwanda, are not guaranteed a place in Africa’s premier club competition until they navigate the domestic mini-league.
A similar scenario unfolded last season when the Omdurman-based club competed in Mauritania.
Even after winning the league there, they were still required to return to Sudan for the qualification tournament, which they eventually won to secure their Champions League spot.
The situation highlights a rare and complex pathway for one of Africa’s most storied clubs, underlining the unique administrative structure governing Sudanese representatives in CAF competitions.
For Al Hilal, the focus now shifts from celebratory success abroad to a decisive domestic battle at home, where continental qualification will once again be on the line.
