Relebohile Mofokeng tops Africa’s rising stars with $3.7m valuation
At a market value of R68.6 million (approximately $3.6 million), Relebohile Mofokeng has been ranked as Africa’s most expensive young player, according to Afroscout, underlining his rapid rise at club and continental level.
The Orlando Pirates attacker leads a list dominated by some of the continent’s brightest prospects. Senegal’s Mamadou Lamine Camara and Nigeria’s Onuche Ogbelu are both valued at around R58.8 million (about $3.1 million), placing them just behind Mofokeng in the rankings.
Mali’s Seydou Dembele follows at approximately R39.2 million ($2.1 million), while Morocco’s Fouad Zahouani is valued at R35 million ($1.8 million).
The valuation reflects a breakout season that has transformed Mofokeng from a promising academy graduate into one of the most sought-after young talents in African football.
Orlando Pirates made their position clear before the campaign began, rejecting multiple transfer approaches despite growing international attention.
Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq reportedly submitted an offer of R26.9 million, while MLS club Minnesota United went higher at R34.9 million. Russian outfit Akron Tolyatti also tested the Buccaneers’ resolve with a bid of around R26 million. All three were turned down as the club opted to retain the 21-year-old.
That decision has been validated by his performances on the pitch. The Sharpeville-born forward, nicknamed “President Yama2K,” has registered nine goals and six assists in the Betway Premiership, making him Orlando Pirates’ leading scorer in the league.
Across all competitions, he has contributed to 20 goals this season, including his first professional hat-trick in a 6-0 win over TS Galaxy. His consistency has been rewarded with consecutive PSL Player of the Month awards for February and March.
His recent form has further elevated his profile, with five goals in two matches, six Man of the Match awards, and a perfect 10.0 Sofascore rating among the standout numbers.
