History made as Durban City rally to claim first Nedbank Cup for KwaZulu-Natal
Durban City FC produced a stirring comeback to defeat TS Galaxy 2-1 and secure a landmark Nedbank Cup title, ending a decades-long drought for KwaZulu-Natal and sealing a lucrative reward of R7 million, approximately $380,000.
The victory at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium carries historic weight. No club from the province had lifted the Nedbank Cup since its inception in 1971, placing Durban City’s achievement among the most significant provincial milestones in South African football.
It also serves as redemption for the club, formerly known as Maritzburg United, following their final defeat in 2018.
The contest unfolded under unusual circumstances, with both sides led by interim coaches. Bernard Parker had been in charge of TS Galaxy for just a week, while Pitso Dladla became Durban City’s third coach of a turbulent campaign.
The encounter initially struggled for rhythm, interrupted by early injuries, but TS Galaxy looked sharper in attack.
Their pressure paid off just before halftime when a dangerous delivery aimed at Victor Letsoalo was turned into his own net by Jean Lwamba, handing Galaxy the lead. Durban City, however, emerged from the break with renewed purpose after Dladla’s tactical adjustment, introducing Luphumlo Sifumba.
The change proved decisive. Mfanafuthi Mkhize levelled in the 58th minute, reacting quickest to a loose ball to fire home from close range. Thirteen minutes later, Lwamba completed his redemption arc, curling a precise finish into the top corner after being picked out by Sifumba.
TS Galaxy pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet produced key saves to preserve the advantage. Despite late injuries and sustained pressure, Durban City held firm through a tense closing spell.
Beyond the trophy and financial windfall, the triumph secures qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup, capping a remarkable turnaround for a side that entered the final in poor league form but delivered when it mattered most.
