Yoane Wissa reveals behind-the-scenes role in Wan-Bissaka’s DR Congo switch
Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa has played a key behind-the-scenes role in strengthening the Democratic Republic of Congo national team, after helping convince West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka to switch international allegiance.
The right-back, who was born in England and previously represented the country at youth level, has now committed his international future to DR Congo, adding top-level Premier League experience to the Leopards’ growing squad.
Wissa revealed that his personal intervention helped influence Wan-Bissaka’s decision, with the two having a crucial conversation ahead of a match two years ago.
“I spoke to him before a match two years ago, so there you go. I saw him take his time, he thought it through properly and today he’s with us. We’re very happy to have him with us,” Wissa said.
The Newcastle forward’s involvement highlights the increasing role of player-to-player influence in modern international football, where national teams often rely on personal relationships and shared heritage to attract dual-nationality players.
Wan-Bissaka’s decision is seen as a major boost for DR Congo, who continue to assemble a competitive squad featuring players active in Europe’s top leagues. His defensive quality, athleticism, and Premier League experience are expected to significantly strengthen the team ahead of upcoming international competitions.
For Wissa and the DR Congo setup, the addition of the former England youth international represents more than just a squad upgrade—it is a symbolic win in the ongoing effort to build a strong, globally competitive national team.
As the Leopards continue to expand their pool of Europe-based talent, Wissa’s influence off the pitch is proving just as valuable as his contributions on it.
