Morocco chances at 2026 FIFA World Cup

Jamal Sellami has cast doubt on Morocco’s chances of replicating their historic run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup when they compete at the 2026 global showpiece.

Speaking on the “Remontada” programme on Medi1TV, the current Jordan national football team coach offered a measured assessment of the squad’s prospects ahead of the tournament set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Building for the Future

Sellami explained that the Moroccan national team is still in a developmental phase, highlighting the presence of promising young talents who are yet to gain sufficient international experience.

According to the former Raja CA manager, the current cycle should be viewed as part of a longer-term project rather than one focused solely on immediate success.

Eyes on 2030 Ambitions

The coach pointed to the 2030 FIFA World Cup as a more realistic target for Morocco to peak, suggesting that the team could evolve into a serious contender by then.

He also referenced the emergence of a talented generation that impressed at youth level, noting that continued exposure at the highest level will be crucial to their development.

Doubts Over Repeating Historic Feat

Sellami was clear in his assessment when addressing expectations for 2026, ruling out a repeat of Morocco’s remarkable semi-final finish in Qatar, where stars like Achraf Hakimi played a key role.

“I rule out that the ‘Lions’ will reach the World Cup final or at least the semi-finals,” he said.

His comments underline a cautious approach, urging patience as Morocco look to build a squad capable of sustained success on the global stage.
