Algeria face goalkeeper crisis ahead of 2026 World Cup
Algeria national football team are facing growing uncertainty in goalkeeping positions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with injuries and inconsistent form disrupting preparations less than two months before the competition.
Since the end of the Raïs M’Bolhi era, Algeria have struggled to establish a clear hierarchy between the posts.
While Luca Zidane has emerged as the leading option, the situation behind him remains unstable, creating concern within the squad.
The latest setback involves Melvin Mastil, who had recently been integrated into the national team setup.
The 26-year-old made his debut in March during a 7-0 victory over Guatemala, signalling his potential as a future option.
However, his progress has been interrupted after sustaining an inguinal hernia that requires surgery.
Mastil, currently playing for Stade Nyonnais on loan from FC Lausanne-Sport, is expected to be sidelined for several weeks, leaving his availability for the World Cup in doubt.
Further uncertainty surrounds Anthony Mandréa, who recently suffered a shoulder dislocation during training with SM Caen.
Although his coach Gaël Clichy offered cautious optimism, stating, ” We still have to wait for the medical staff’s verdict, but the situation seems a little more reassuring than expected. “, the timing of the injury raises concerns over his readiness.
Mandréa had been expected to compete for the role of second-choice goalkeeper, particularly after the withdrawal of Alexis Guendouz earlier in the season. His setback further complicates the depth chart.
Amid these challenges, Zidane remains the only relatively stable option. The Granada CF goalkeeper has regained his starting position and occasionally worn the captain’s armband, though questions remain about the depth behind him.
Alternative options exist but come with uncertainties. Experienced goalkeepers such as Gaya Merbah and Farid Chaâl are being considered, while younger prospect Kilian Belazzoug represents a long-term solution.
The case of Oussama Benbot also adds intrigue. Despite announcing his international retirement after strong performances with USM Alger, he could potentially be persuaded to return given the current situation.
With time running out, Algeria’s preparations are being overshadowed by uncertainty in a key position, leaving the coaching staff with difficult decisions to make before the tournament begins.
