Burnley snap up Angolan youth international Delfim Luwawu on four-year deal
Burnley have completed the permanent signing of Angolan youth international Delfim Luwawu from Academia de Futebol de Angola (AFA), with the highly rated midfielder putting pen to paper on a four-year contract.
The 18-year-old defensive midfielder will initially link up with Burnley’s Under-21 squad as he begins the next chapter of his development in English football.
Luwawu expressed his delight at completing the move, admitting that while he expected the opportunity to arrive eventually, the timing came sooner than anticipated.
“Signing a contract at Burnley is a happy moment for me and I always knew that this moment might come, but not this fast,” Luwawu said.
“This will be a good challenge for me, and I want to help the club to achieve its objectives. I’ve been welcomed very well by the coaching department, so it already feels like home.”
From Luanda to England
Born in Luanda, Luwawu started his football journey in Angola before being identified by AFA scouts in 2017. He subsequently progressed through the academy ranks, developing into one of the promising young players to emerge from the club’s system.
His progress earned him international recognition with Angola’s youth teams, with the defensive midfielder playing an important role in the country’s campaign at the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Luwawu helped Angola secure qualification for the tournament through the COSAFA section, gaining valuable experience on the international stage before attracting interest from abroad.
Burnley banking on his potential
Burnley’s decision to hand Luwawu a long-term contract underlines their belief in his potential, although the immediate plan is for him to continue his development with the club’s Under-21 side.
The move gives the teenager an opportunity to adapt to the demands of English football while working within Burnley’s development structure.
For Luwawu, the transfer represents a major step from local football in Luanda to the professional environment in England. His performances at youth level in Angola have now earned him the chance to test himself in a new footballing culture.
With four years secured on his contract, Burnley will hope the Angolan midfielder can develop steadily and eventually push towards the senior team as he becomes accustomed to life at the club.
