Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo joins Charlton Athletic on season-long loan from Wrexham
Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Nigeria international goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on a season-long loan from Wrexham.
The move sees Okonkwo become the Addicks’ eighth signing of the summer as manager Nathan Jones continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper joins a growing group of new arrivals at The Valley, following the acquisitions of Ivan Mesík, Billy Koumetio, Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara, Millenic Alli, Nathaniel Chalobah and Timothy Ouma.
Okonkwo arrives at the Championship side with the opportunity to establish himself as an important figure for Charlton while continuing his development under Jones.
Okonkwo eager to make an impact
The Nigeria international expressed his delight after completing the move to south-east London, insisting he is ready to embrace the challenge and build on his progress as a goalkeeper.
“I’m happy to be here and I’m ready to go,” he said.
Okonkwo revealed that his discussions with Jones played an important role in his decision to join Charlton, with the manager outlining his desire for the goalkeeper to develop further while delivering strong performances for the club.
“Coming here, it’s another season where I really want to do well and improve again. Speaking to the manager, that’s what he wants me to do here – not only to do well, but to improve as a goalkeeper.”
The goalkeeper also praised the reception he has received from his new teammates since arriving at the club and is looking forward to building stronger relationships within the squad.
“It’s a great group. They’ve welcomed me really well and I can’t wait to get to know them even more.”
Charlton continue summer rebuild
Okonkwo’s arrival represents another significant addition to a Charlton squad undergoing considerable changes during the summer.
The Addicks have moved quickly to reinforce several areas of the team, with the goalkeeper now joining an eight-man recruitment class designed to give Jones greater depth and competition ahead of the new season.
For Okonkwo, the loan spell provides another opportunity to gain valuable experience and continue his development while competing at a new club.
With his arrival now confirmed, attention will turn to whether the Nigeria international can establish himself as Charlton’s first-choice goalkeeper and play a key role in the club’s ambitions for the campaign.
