Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes closes in on RS Berkane move

Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes is in advanced talks to join Moroccan club RS Berkane, where he could reunite with former national team coach Bubista.

The Moroccan side has reportedly offered the 36-year-old forward a one-year contract with the option of extending the agreement for another season.

Mendes is currently a free agent and could now continue his career in Morocco after negotiations with RS Berkane progressed significantly.

The potential move would see the veteran forward work again with Bubista, who recently took charge of the Moroccan club after guiding Cape Verde to their historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Bubista has already signed with RS Berkane, with his agreement reportedly running until 2028.

A reunion between the coach and Mendes would bring together two figures who played important roles in Cape Verde’s recent progress.

Bubista knows the forward’s qualities and leadership well, having worked with him during his time with the national team.

Mendes has been a major figure in Cape Verdean football for more than a decade. The Fogo-born player made his international debut in 2010 and has since established himself as one of the country’s most recognisable players.

He has won more than 100 caps for Cape Verde and was part of the squad that competed at the 2026 World Cup.

Mendes started all of Cape Verde’s matches at the tournament and also provided an assist against Argentina in the round of 32.

His importance to the national team has extended well beyond his performances on the pitch, with the veteran serving as captain and providing experience to the side.

Although Mendes is no longer able to rely on the pace that was one of his biggest strengths earlier in his career, he continues to offer technical ability, vision and experience.

The forward also enters the potential move after a successful campaign in the Turkish second division.

For RS Berkane, his arrival would add another experienced player to their squad ahead of an important season.

The Moroccan club finished as runners-up domestically and are aiming to challenge for the national title again.

They are also looking to build on their recent continental campaign after reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Mendes’ possible arrival would therefore provide RS Berkane with an experienced option as they prepare for those ambitions.

The negotiations with the Cape Verde captain are already at an advanced stage, with the proposed one-year contract and additional-year option forming the basis of the agreement.

If the deal is completed, Mendes will begin a new chapter in Morocco and reunite with Bubista at club level after their work together with Cape Verde.
