Kaizer Chiefs’ reported interest in former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro has reignited debate over whether the Soweto giants are ready to make a statement signing, with the Brazilian’s future once again under scrutiny as the season progresses in Spain.

Ribeiro, 27, is currently on the books of Spanish second-tier side Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, having joined earlier in the campaign.

However, his stint in Europe has yet to deliver the level of impact many anticipated, with limited influence on matches raising questions about his long-term role at the club.

With suggestions emerging that he could become a free agent at the end of the season, the situation has naturally attracted attention from clubs monitoring attacking reinforcements.

Among those linked, Kaizer Chiefs stand out, with the club’s supporters eager for a proven attacking presence. SoccerBeat owner and former South African professional Peter du Toit believes the opportunity should not be overlooked, describing Ribeiro as a potential game-changing addition for the Soweto side.

“He’s a player I believe is a marquee signing waiting to happen. Lucas Ribeiro could be free at the end of the season, and Kaizer Chiefs should take a bold step and bring him in,” he said.

“It would lift the entire fan base, show real intent, and he would obviously improve the team. The current players would benefit from having someone like him, and he can give you 10 to 12 goals a season.”

Ribeiro’s recent career trajectory has, however, been far from straightforward. In August 2025, he ended his association with Mamelodi Sundowns and escalated the dispute to FIFA in pursuit of a release, before sealing a move to Leonesa a month later.

Not everyone is convinced a return to South African football is realistic. Former Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela has questioned whether the forward’s ambitions align with a move back to the Premier Soccer League, suggesting his focus may remain on Europe.

“I don’t think he went through all that just to come back after one season,” Masilela said.

“The way he left Sundowns, going to FIFA and forcing a move, suggests he wants to break into a bigger league. I believe his plan was to use that move as a stepping stone to a top European league and possibly the Brazilian national team.”

He added that only an exceptional financial package might alter the situation, underlining the complexity of any potential deal. Beyond Chiefs, North African side Espérance de Tunis are also believed to be monitoring developments closely.
