Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy has been handed a four-match suspension following an altercation with a match official in the aftermath of a heated Egyptian Pro League encounter against Ceramica Cleopatra.

The incident occurred after a 1-1 draw on Tuesday, when tensions spilled over in stoppage time. El-Shenawy, who was among the substitutes, reacted angrily after his side were denied a late penalty appeal for a suspected handball.

His frustration culminated in physical contact with the referee, prompting swift disciplinary action from league authorities.

“A four-match ban and fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds (£700) for assaulting the referee by pushing or pulling [use of the hand without violence],” read an official statement confirming the punishment.

Key absence at a crucial stage

The suspension comes at a sensitive point in the season, with Al Ahly navigating the decisive Championship phase of the league. The reigning champions currently sit third after their opening play-off fixture, trailing leaders Zamalek by five points.

El-Shenawy’s absence will extend until the closing stretch of the play-offs, depriving the Cairo giants of one of their most experienced figures during a period where consistency is vital. His leadership and composure have long been central to Al Ahly’s domestic and continental success.

International implications limited

Despite the setback, the 37-year-old’s standing on the international stage appears unaffected. Having served as Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, he remains in contention for selection ahead of this summer’s World Cup in North America.

While the ban represents a disciplinary blemish, it is unlikely to derail his role with Egypt national football team.

Nonetheless, the episode underscores the pressures that accompany high-stakes fixtures, particularly in tightly contested title races where margins for error are minimal.
