The Ghana Black Starlets have been handed a formidable path in their highly anticipated return to the continental stage after being drawn into a daunting Group D for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The official draw, conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo on Wednesday, places the two-time champions alongside the Teranga Cubs of Senegal, the Amajimbos of South Africa, and the Fennecs of Algeria.

This tournament, scheduled to run from May 13 to June 2 in Morocco, marks a historic milestone for Ghana, who return to the competition for the first time since 2017.

After a nine-year absence from the finals, the Black Starlets—winners in 1995 and 1999—face what is widely regarded as the ‘Group of Death’.

Each opponent brings a distinct pedigree: Senegal enters as a perennial youth powerhouse, while South Africa and Algeria are renowned for their tactical discipline and technical flair, making every match in the cluster a high-stakes encounter.

The stakes for the Morocco showpiece are higher than ever, as the tournament serves as the primary qualifying route for the expanded 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

With Africa now allocated 10 slots for the global stage, the path to qualification is clear: the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages and secure automatic World Cup berths.

Additionally, third-placed teams will have a lifeline, competing in playoffs for the remaining two global spots.

For the Black Starlets, the objective in Morocco is twofold: ending their long hiatus with a deep run and reclaiming their status among the world’s elite.

Navigating this challenging group is the first critical step toward securing a ticket to Qatar and restoring the pride of a nation that once dominated African youth football.
