Raja Casablanca head coach Fadlu Davids has opened up on how Steve Barker secured his surprise move to Tanzanian giants Simba SC, revealing that he played a key role in recommending the experienced South African tactician.

Barker’s appointment in December raised eyebrows across the football community, as the 58-year-old had spent nearly a decade at Stellenbosch FC before taking up the new challenge.

His departure came despite a difficult run of form for Stellenbosch, and he was drafted in to replace Dimitar Pantev, who failed to meet expectations at the club.

Davids, who previously left his post shortly after the season began to take up the head coach role at Raja Casablanca, disclosed that Barker’s interest in coaching abroad prompted him to put his name forward when Simba were searching for a new manager.

“For sure that is definitely one thing that I’ve done when I left (open doors for South African coaches), because I heard word from Steve Barker that he is interested, I definitely put his name there (at Simba) to say he’s a good coach, look at him,” Davids told the Siya crew.

According to Davids, Simba initially pursued Pantev, but after an unsuccessful spell, they turned to Barker following a recruitment process that ultimately led to his appointment.

“He didn’t go immediately because they first went for Pantev and he was not successful and then of course they came to their senses and gave Steve Barker the job after the interview.

Davids expressed satisfaction at Barker’s progress in Tanzania, praising both his decision to take the leap and the broader potential for South African coaches across the continent.

“I’m really happy that Steve went there and he’s doing well, like I said also, South African coaches are really talented, there are opportunities in Africa and sometimes you just have to take the chance,” Davids said.

He concluded by commending Barker’s willingness to step out of his comfort zone, describing the move as a valuable opportunity and wishing him success in his new role.

“Steve Barker was willing, we got information from him that he’s willing to move, to take the step, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for him and I really wish him all the best,” the 44-year-old coach added.
