Injury forces William Saliba out as France turn to Lacroix

Arsenal defender William Saliba has been forced to withdraw from the France national team squad ahead of their upcoming international friendlies due to an ankle injury.

The 24-year-old center-back reported recurring pain in his left ankle following Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, leading to his immediate medical assessment and subsequent release from international duty.

The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed the news on Monday, stating that Saliba requires a minimum of ten days of complete rest to manage the inflammation.

While the injury is not believed to be long-term, the timing is a significant blow for both the player and the national team as they begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

Saliba will remain in London to undergo rehabilitation with the Arsenal medical staff, placing his availability for the Gunners’ Premier League fixture against Southampton on April 4 in doubt.

In his absence, France manager Didier Deschamps has handed a maiden senior call-up to Crystal Palace vice-captain Maxence Lacroix.

The 25-year-old has been in standout form in the Premier League this season, appearing 43 times across all competitions. While Lacroix has extensive experience with French youth teams, this marks his first opportunity to break into the senior setup.

The French squad is scheduled to travel to the United States this week for a high-profile double-header. They will face Brazil at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on March 26, followed by a clash against Colombia in Maryland on March 29.

For Saliba, the focus shifts to a swift recovery to ensure he remains a lock for Deschamps’ final tournament squad, while Lacroix enters the fold looking to prove he belongs at the highest international level.
