AS Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli has thrown his full support behind Senegalese internationals Krepin Diatta and Lamine Camara following the controversial decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title.

The ruling by the Confederation of African Football’s Appeal Committee, which reassigned the 2025 AFCON crown to Morocco, has sparked widespread debate across the football world. However, the AS Monaco boss has made it clear that, in his eyes, nothing can diminish what his players achieved on the pitch.

Speaking on Saturday, March 21, Pocognoli praised the mentality of both Diatta and Camara, insisting that the controversy has not significantly impacted them despite the magnitude of the decision.

“For me, they remain my champions. I think Krepin and Lamine feel the same way. For them, they are champions,” he stated.

The Belgian tactician emphasized that certain external decisions are beyond the control of players, suggesting that the essence of competition lies in performances delivered on the field rather than administrative rulings.

“We can’t control anything that’s taken out of context. But it hasn’t affected them too much, so whatever the outcome, we can always discuss the whys and wherefores of how it was done,” he added.

Pocognoli further highlighted the efforts and sacrifices made by the Senegalese squad throughout the tournament, underlining that their journey to lifting the trophy—regardless of its later revocation—deserves recognition and respect.

“But we had to play those matches and win them. We’re very proud of what they’ve achieved. I think they’re aware that they’re champions,” he concluded.

The comments reflect a growing sentiment among players, coaches, and fans who believe that Senegal’s accomplishments on the pitch cannot simply be erased by a post-tournament decision.

For Diatta and Camara, Pocognoli’s words serve as a strong vote of confidence as they continue their club duties, carrying with them the pride of a campaign many still regard as worthy of champions.
