The Government of Senegal has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip the country of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and reassign it to Morocco.

In a press release dated March 18, 2026, authorities in Dakar described the ruling as “of exceptional gravity,” arguing that it contradicts the fundamental principles of fairness, merit, and respect for results on the pitch.

The government insisted that the outcome of the final, won in accordance with the rules of the game, should not be overturned by what it called a “manifestly erroneous interpretation” of regulations.

The statement warned that the move risks damaging the credibility of CAF and eroding public trust in African football institutions.

It further stressed that Senegal would not accept what it termed an “administrative decision that erases commitment, merit, and sporting excellence.”

Escalating its response, Senegal called for an independent international investigation into suspected corruption within CAF’s governing structures.

It also signaled its readiness to pursue all available legal channels, including action before international courts, to challenge the ruling and restore what it considers the rightful outcome of the tournament.

The government reiterated its support for Senegalese players and officials who participated in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, pledging close monitoring of the situation until a resolution is reached.

In closing, officials emphasized that Senegal remains “resolute, vigilant, and unwavering” in defending the rights of its national team and safeguarding the integrity of African football.
