Wesley Fofana rues costly Chelsea mistakes in heavy PSG defeat
Wesley Fofana did not hold back after Chelsea’s 5-2 Champions League last-16 first-leg loss to Paris Saint-Germain, openly criticising the defensive lapses that handed PSG control late on.
“At this level, you don’t have the right to make these kinds of mistakes,” Fofana told Canal+. “We are making gross errors. We go to press at the end and we concede the fifth. We made too many mistakes and they punished us. Paris is a great team.”
Chelsea had battled back twice through Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernandez to make it 2-2, but a risky short pass from goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen was picked off, allowing Vitinha to restore PSG’s lead.
Substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia then struck twice in the final 10 minutes to put the tie firmly in PSG’s favour. Fofana defended Chelsea’s commitment to playing out from the back, saying, “We don’t hide, we take a lot of risks on the ball exits. We are all in agreement to play like this,” while insisting there is still hope. “It’s not over, we have three goals to score at home. We have nothing to lose.”
Chelsea now face a huge task in the return leg at Stamford Bridge, alongside a busy domestic schedule as they chase a top-four finish.
