Achraf Hakimi equals Samuel Kuffour’s Champions League appearance record

Achraf Hakimi has matched a long-standing record in the UEFA Champions League, becoming the African defender with the most appearances in the tournament alongside former Ghana international Samuel Kuffour.

The Paris Saint-Germain full-back reached the milestone during his team’s match against Chelsea FC in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

By starting the fixture, Hakimi brought his total number of appearances in the competition to 72, equalling the record previously held by Kuffour.

The achievement places the Moroccan international among the most experienced African defenders to have competed in Europe’s most prestigious club tournament.

Hakimi’s Champions League journey has spanned several top European clubs.

Early in his career he featured for Real Madrid CF, before gaining further experience at Borussia Dortmund.

He later represented Inter Milan, where his attacking contributions from the right flank earned widespread recognition, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain.

Across his appearances in the competition, the Moroccan defender has made a notable impact both defensively and offensively.

In addition to his consistency at the back, Hakimi has contributed 10 goals and 15 assists in Champions League matches.

Samuel Kuffour, whose record Hakimi has now equalled, built his reputation during a distinguished spell with FC Bayern Munich, where he was regarded as a key figure in the club’s defence during their European campaigns.

Hakimi’s milestone highlights the growing presence and influence of African players in European club football.

With his appearance total now matching Kuffour’s record, the Paris Saint-Germain defender has further strengthened his place among the continent’s most prominent footballers competing at the highest level of the game.

As his Champions League career continues, Hakimi now stands level with Kuffour at the top of the list for African defenders in terms of appearances in the competition.
