Promising PSV striker Sami Bouhoudane ditches Netherlands to play Morocco

PSV Eindhoven’s rising star, Sami Bouhoudane, has chosen to represent Morocco at the U20 level, turning down the Netherlands in a move confirmed on March 5.

The announcement, reported by leading football sources including journalist Fabrizio Romano, comes despite persistent efforts by the Royal Dutch Football Association to retain him within their youth setup.

At 18, Bouhoudane’s decision aligns with Morocco’s current standing as reigning U20 world champions, offering an attractive platform for a young player eager to compete at the highest level of youth football.

Born in the Netherlands to Moroccan parents, Bouhoudane previously featured for the Netherlands across various youth categories but has now committed to the Atlas Lions.

A product of PSV’s academy since 2018, Bouhoudane has steadily climbed the ranks and impressed during the 2025–26 season:

  • UEFA Youth League: 4 goals in 4 matches for PSV U19
  • Eerste Divisie: 5 goals in 12 appearances for Jong PSV

Known for his physical presence and clinical finishing, Bouhoudane is regarded as a complete forward, combining strength, technical skill, and goal-scoring instinct.

His decision marks another coup for the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which has increasingly targeted dual-national players trained in Europe.

Bouhoudane follows the path of other diaspora talents, such as PSV midfielder Ismael Saibari, who have chosen Morocco over their country of birth.

With his scoring form and rapid development, Bouhoudane is poised to play a key role in Morocco’s youth teams, potentially helping the Atlas Cubs defend their U20 world title and solidify the next generation of Moroccan football talent.
