Cassius Mailula backed to rediscover scoring touch at Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns forward Cassius Mailula has been backed to score heavily after making an encouraging return to the club, with teammate Kekana confident the 24-year-old can regain the form that made him a prominent figure during his first spell.
Mailula rejoined Sundowns after spending three years away from the club, a period in which he played football in the MLS, Morocco and Belgium. His return has been immediate and productive, with the forward scoring twice in his first three appearances.
The early goals have provided a timely lift for Mailula following a difficult spell abroad. Last season, he struggled to find the net while competing for regular playing time at KV Kortrijk.
Mailula was already familiar with the environment at Sundowns, having scored 15 goals during his first stint with the club. That existing connection has helped him settle back into the squad quickly, with many of the players he knew before still at the club.
Kekana said Mailula’s return had been welcomed by the squad and praised his ability to make an impact in front of goal.
“Obviously a good addition for us because we have always loved Cash,” highlights Kekana.
“He has always done the business for us.
“We are happy that he is scoring again.
“His confidence is coming back.
“It wasn’t difficult for him to gel with us because when he was here most of us are still here.
“You know, but a quality player.
“We know he is going to be banging a lot of goals this season.
“We just need to make sure that his confidence is back, and he just keeps striking for us.
“But we are happy with Cash,” says Kekana.
The backing comes as Mailula looks to build on a promising start to his second stint with Sundowns. His two goals in three appearances have already offered evidence that his confidence is returning after a season in which opportunities and goals were difficult to find.
Sundowns will now hope the forward can maintain that momentum and become a regular source of goals during the season. Kekana’s comments underline the belief within the club that Mailula still has the quality to deliver consistently, having previously shown his value during his first spell.
The forward’s return also gives him the chance to continue rebuilding his form in familiar surroundings, with the club and squad providing an environment in which he has already settled without difficulty.
