Take the next step: El Hadji Diouf urged to leave West Ham as relegation fears spark transfer talk
Growing uncertainty around West Ham United has intensified speculation over the future of El Hadji Malick Diouf, with former Senegal international Yatma Diop advising the 21-year-old to consider a move away from east London.
Diouf only arrived from SK Slavia Prague last summer in a deal worth around £19 million, committing his long-term future to the London Stadium.
Yet within months, he has emerged as one of the Hammers’ standout performers. His energy down the left flank and growing tactical maturity have made him one of the club’s most reliable outlets in a difficult campaign.
That rise has inevitably drawn attention. Several Premier League sides are monitoring the Senegal international, and interest is expected to accelerate if West Ham fail to preserve their top-flight status. Relegation would not only dent the club’s finances but could force a reassessment of their most valuable assets, with Diouf near the top of that list.
Diop believes the timing may be right for the defender to elevate his career further. Speaking to Africa Foot, he praised Diouf’s development and suggested that a club competing in European competitions would represent natural progression.
He pointed to the player’s status as an Africa Cup of Nations winner and a likely participant at the upcoming World Cup as further evidence that he is ready for a bigger platform.
“He’s very strong and on a great run of form. If there’s interest from other Premier League clubs who also play in European competitions, why not?
“He also needs to take the next step in his career, especially since he’s an African Cup of Nations champion and will be participating in the next World Cup in a few months with Senegal, if all goes well.
“But everything will depend on West Ham, where he’s still under contract.”
West Ham, however, remain protected by the length of Diouf’s contract, placing them in a strong negotiating position should bids materialise. Any departure would demand careful succession planning.
One name linked is Souffian El Karouani of FC Utrecht. The 25-year-old has registered 19 assists this season, created 72 chances and delivered 82 successful crosses in the Eredivisie. With his contract expiring and reported interest from Leeds United F.C., a Premier League switch appears plausible.
