Egypt vs Spain friendly in doubt after Qatar postpones international events
Plans for the Egyptian national team’s March training camp have been thrown into uncertainty following recent developments in Qatar.
The Qatar Football Association announced at the start of the month that all tournaments, competitions and matches would be postponed until further notice due to the escalating security situation in the region.
In its official statement, the federation confirmed that new dates for the resumption of activities would be communicated through its official channels, while expressing hopes for continued security and stability in the country.
Egypt had been scheduled to hold a preparatory camp in Qatar, where the Egypt national football team were set to face both the Spain national football team and the Saudi Arabia national football team in friendly matches as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, the exchange of military strikes between the United States and Iran, which extended to parts of the Gulf region, disrupted those arrangements.
According to Egyptian journalist Ahmed Abdel Basset, Qatar has issued a verbal apology for its inability to host the planned mini-tournament this month due to the current political climate.
Abdel Basset indicated that moving the event to Egypt remains a possibility, but a key obstacle surrounds Spain’s participation.
He noted that La Roja were set to receive two million dollars for taking part, in addition to travel and accommodation expenses, a financial package that would pose significant challenges for the Egyptian Football Association.
At present, the Egyptian FA is exploring alternative options in consultation with the national team’s technical staff.
With uncertainty lingering over the March schedule and broader global developments, the fate of the high-profile friendly against Spain remains unresolved.
