Marcel Desailly backs Kylian Mbappe to feature at 2026 FIFA World Cup despite knee injury

France legend Marcel Desailly has voiced strong optimism about Kylian Mbappe’s chances of playing in the upcoming World Cup despite his recent left knee sprain.

Speaking in Madrid on Tuesday at the Laureus Awards nominees announcement, the former defender brushed aside worries about the star forward’s fitness.

“There’s no need to stress,” Desailly said. “It’s in three months and I don’t see how he couldn’t recover and not participate in this competition. Great players never miss major competitions.”

Desailly highlighted Mbappe’s vital role for France, adding, “It’s up to the coach to leave him out or not, if necessary. But given his statistics, there’s no room for discussion. He’s a fantastic player.”

He also dismissed claims that Mbappé is behind Real Madrid’s recent struggles since joining from PSG. “I don’t understand why he would be a problem. He scores and has very good statistics since leaving Paris, where he was already exceptional.”

While acknowledging the need for tactical adjustments in possession and pace, Desailly’s words offer hope to France fans as Mbappé undergoes treatment in Paris.
