Iran threaten 2026 World Cup withdrawal ahead of Egypt clash
Iran have raised the possibility of withdrawing from the 2026 World Cup, casting uncertainty over their scheduled group-stage meeting with Egypt.
The Asian nation, drawn in Group G alongside Egypt, New Zealand and Belgium, is now facing doubts over its participation following escalating tensions involving the United States and Iran.
The tournament is set to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Speaking to MARCA, Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, suggested the current situation has made preparations increasingly difficult.
“Given what happened today, it is difficult to look forward to the World Cup with any hope ,” he said.
“But it’s up to the sports ministers to decide.”
The comments introduce uncertainty into Group G, where Egypt had been preparing to face Iran as one of their three initial opponents.
The Pharaohs are due to compete against New Zealand and Belgium as well in the opening phase of the tournament.
Iran’s potential withdrawal would represent a significant development for the competition, given the scale of the event and the geopolitical backdrop surrounding it.
However, no official confirmation has yet been issued regarding a final decision.
The 2026 World Cup will mark the first edition of the tournament to be staged across three host nations.
Preparations are ongoing across North America, with participating teams finalising logistics and planning.
For now, Iran’s participation remains unresolved, pending discussions at ministerial level.
Taj’s remarks indicate that any definitive outcome will depend on decisions taken beyond the football authorities.
With the group stage drawing nearer, organisers and competing nations will be watching closely for clarification on whether Iran will ultimately take their place in Group G or opt to step aside from the tournament.
