Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi faces final hurdle in recovery
Semi Ajayi is edging closer to a return for Hull City after weeks on the sidelines, although the defender has yet to resume full training following the injury he sustained at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 32-year-old centre-back has not featured since picking up a hamstring problem during Nigeria’s third-place play-off against Egypt national football team.
His absence has forced Hull City to cope without one of their most experienced defenders for seven matches in all competitions.
Assistant coach Dean Holden has now offered a cautious but positive update on Ajayi’s rehabilitation.
“Semi (Ajayi) is doing well, but again, he hasn’t yet returned to full training,” Holden said.
According to reports, Ajayi is currently following an individual recovery programme and must receive medical clearance before rejoining the squad for full sessions. Only then will he be considered available for competitive fixtures.
The injury came at an unfortunate time for both club and country. Before the setback in the Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal match, Ajayi had been in strong form.
He had made 12 league appearances for Hull this season, scoring once, while also playing a key role for Nigeria during the continental tournament.
Hull’s coaching staff also indicated that midfielder Toby Collyer, who is sidelined with injury, is slightly behind Ajayi in his own recovery process.
For now, Hull are proceeding carefully with Ajayi’s return, balancing the need for defensive reinforcement with the importance of ensuring the Nigerian international is fully fit before stepping back onto the pitch.
