Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi nearing comeback after AFCON setback
Semi Ajayi is set to resume full training with Hull City A.F.C. next week after a hamstring injury, with head coach Sergej Jakirović outlining a clear timeline for the defender’s return following his absence since Nigeria’s continental campaign.
Ajayi, 32, has been sidelined since the closing stages of the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations run, leaving Hull without one of their central defensive options for six matches across competitions.
According to reports carried by Complete Sports, the club now expects the Nigerian international to take the next step in his recovery by rejoining group sessions, a milestone seen internally as the final phase before competitive selection becomes possible.
The injury dates back to Nigeria’s bronze medal match against Egypt, when Ajayi was forced off late in the game with a hamstring problem and replaced by Chidozie Awaziem.
Since then, he has followed an individual rehabilitation programme separate from the main squad, focusing on regaining strength and match readiness.
Jakirović’s update signals growing confidence that the defender’s recovery is progressing as planned
A return to collective training will allow coaches to assess his physical condition in a competitive environment, bridging the gap between medical clearance and match fitness.
While Ajayi’s situation is improving, Hull continue to manage other injury concerns. The manager confirmed that Matty Jacob has suffered a medial collateral ligament injury sustained during training, an issue expected to keep the left-back out for six to eight weeks. That setback adds to the club’s defensive challenges even as Ajayi nears reintegration.
For Hull, the defender’s impending return offers a measure of stability at a time when squad depth has been tested. Ajayi’s experience and positional awareness are viewed as important assets as the team navigates upcoming fixtures.
The focus now shifts to how smoothly the Nigerian international transitions back into full sessions. Participation in group training represents the final stage of rehabilitation, and if progress continues without complications, Ajayi could soon be available for selection, ending a spell that has kept him out since the continental tournament.
