Ghana national football team will lock horns with Mexico national football team on May 22 in an international friendly as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The high-profile warm-up match has been officially confirmed by the Ghana Football Association, which described the fixture as a key step in Ghana’s preparations for the global showpiece in North America.
“Ghana will play an international friendly against Mexico in May as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. Both countries will use the match to further assess players eligible to represent them at the tournament in Mexico, Canada, and the United States,” the Ghana FA said in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the association, the Black Stars squad for the Mexico encounter will feature a blend of locally based players and Ghanaian footballers plying their trade in Europe, all of whom are being closely monitored by head coach Otto Addo. The team is also expected to include some U-23 players who are preparing to represent Ghana in the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers.
While the friendly is scheduled to take place in Mexico, details regarding the specific venue are yet to be confirmed, with the host stadium still to be announced.
The confirmation of the Mexico fixture means Ghana now have three major international friendlies lined up ahead of the World Cup.
The Ghana FA had earlier revealed that the Black Stars will face Austria national football team and Germany national football team during the next FIFA international window in March, giving Otto Addo and his technical team a valuable opportunity to test their squad against strong opposition.
The Black Stars’ head coach and his backroom staff are expected to announce the squad for the Austria and Germany games in the coming days as preparations intensify.
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ghana have been drawn into Group L, where they will open their campaign against Panama national football team on June 17, before going on to face England national football team and Croatia national football team in what promises to be a demanding group.
