Michael Oliver appointed for Netherlands vs Sweden World Cup clash

Michael Oliver will take charge of the Netherlands’ meeting with Sweden at the 2026 World Cup after FIFA confirmed the experienced English referee as the official for the group-stage fixture.

The 41-year-old will oversee the match, which is scheduled for Saturday at 19:00 GMT at Bramail Lane Stadium, marking his first appearance as a referee in this year’s tournament.

Oliver was originally selected to officiate the Ivory Coast against Ecuador match but was forced to withdraw after suffering an injury.

Having now recovered, the English official is ready to return to action on football’s biggest stage.

FIFA has placed its confidence in Oliver’s experience, with the referee having built a strong reputation through years of handling major Premier League and Champions League matches.

The Netherlands and Sweden enter the fixture looking to strengthen their position in the group. The Dutch side will be aiming for a positive result, while Sweden will also see the match as an important opportunity in their qualification campaign.

Oliver will not work alone, with the refereeing team including two fellow English officials. Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring have been appointed as assistant referees, continuing their partnership with Oliver.

Their previous experience working together is expected to help maintain communication and consistency throughout a match likely to demand strong decision-making due to its intensity and physical nature.

There will also be African representation within the officiating crew, with South African officials included in the match team. Abongile Tom has been named as the fourth official, while Zakhele Siwela will serve as the reserve assistant referee.

The combination of Oliver’s experience and the international support team selected by FIFA is expected to provide a strong refereeing setup for a fixture that could have a major influence on the race for qualification to the knockout stage.

With both teams chasing important points, attention will now turn to the officials as Oliver prepares to make his first World Cup appearance of the tournament.
