Yan Diomande tipped for first Real Madrid start in Champions League clash with Inter Milan

Real Madrid are poised to hand record signing Yan Diomande his first start of the season when they open their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Diomande has yet to feature in the starting XI since completing his club-record £120 million (€140m) transfer from RB Leipzig, but the Champions League meeting with Inter could provide the perfect stage for Jose Mourinho to unleash the highly rated Ivorian winger from the outset.

The 20-year-old is expected to operate in an attacking role as Mourinho looks to compensate for the absence of Arda Guler, who is suspended for the European opener. Diomande’s opportunity comes at a significant moment, with the Portuguese coach expected to rotate his options after Real Madrid’s perfect start to the domestic campaign was halted at the weekend.

Diomande handed golden opportunity

Mourinho has so far resisted the temptation to throw Diomande straight into his starting line-up following his expensive arrival from RB Leipzig.

That could change against Inter, with the former Tottenham and Chelsea boss potentially viewing the Champions League as the ideal occasion to introduce his new attacking weapon to the Bernabeu faithful from the first whistle.

Diomande’s direct style and attacking ability could offer Real Madrid a different dimension, particularly with Guler unavailable. His inclusion would also give Mourinho an opportunity to assess how the Ivorian fits alongside Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe in one of European football’s most formidable attacking units.

The predicted XI has Diomande starting on the right side of a three-man attacking midfield, with Bellingham operating centrally and Vinicius Junior on the opposite flank behind Mbappe.

Mourinho faces former club

Tuesday’s encounter carries added significance for Mourinho, who returned to Real Madrid during the summer partly because of the prospect of competing on nights such as this.

The Inter clash also brings the Portuguese tactician face-to-face with one of his former clubs. Mourinho enjoyed one of the defining periods of his managerial career at Inter, leading the Italian giants to a historic treble in 2010.

His return to the Bernabeu has otherwise begun strongly, with Madrid winning every LaLiga fixture during August before suffering a surprise 1-0 defeat to Real Betis over the weekend.

Three key absences for Madrid

Real Madrid will be without Bernardo Silva, Guler and Eduardo Camavinga, all of whom are suspended under UEFA competition rules.

The trio were sent off in the club’s final European match of last season and must therefore sit out the opening Champions League fixture of the new campaign.

Guler and Camavinga both started against Betis, meaning Mourinho must make at least two changes to the side that suffered defeat.

Camavinga’s absence could see Aurelien Tchouameni return to midfield alongside Federico Valverde, while Diomande is expected to benefit most from Guler’s suspension.

Marc Cucurella’s fitness is another consideration after he was forced off with cramp against Betis. Alvaro Carreras could therefore come into the starting XI at left-back.
