World Cup 2026: Ivory Coast – Team profile and history
Ivory Coast return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2014 carrying the confidence of African champions and one of the continent’s most balanced squads. Coach Emerse Fae has assembled a team that blends experienced leaders with exciting young talent. The Elephants are particularly strong in defence and midfield, with players competing at some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Their attack features pace, creativity, and versatility, making them one of Africa’s most dangerous teams at the tournament.
Ivory Coast’s FIFA World Cup History
The Ivory Coast national team, known as the Elephants, made their FIFA World Cup debut in 2006 after a golden generation led by stars such as Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, and Kolo Toure guided the country to its first-ever qualification.
The Elephants qualified for three consecutive World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014. However, they were unfortunate to be drawn into difficult groups on each occasion. In 2006 they faced Argentina and the Netherlands, while in 2010 they met Brazil and Portugal. Despite impressive performances and victories over Serbia & Montenegro and North Korea, they failed to progress beyond the group stage.
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Ivory Coast came closest to reaching the knockout stage. After defeating Japan and pushing Colombia all the way, they needed only a draw against Greece in their final group match but conceded a late penalty and lost 2-1, ending their hopes.
After missing the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, Ivory Coast returned to the global stage by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Overall, the nation has made four World Cup appearances (2006, 2010, 2014 and 2026), with the group stage remaining their best finish.
Key Players
Franck Kessie
The midfielder remains the heartbeat of the team. His leadership, ball-winning ability, and experience in major tournaments make him indispensable.
Amad Diallo
The Manchester United winger is arguably Ivory Coast’s most exciting attacking weapon. His dribbling, creativity, and eye for goal can unlock even the most organized defences.
Simon Adingra
The speedy winger offers direct running and attacking flair. His ability to stretch defences makes him a major threat on the counterattack.
Ousmane Diomande
The young centre-back has developed into one of Africa’s top defenders and will be crucial to Ivory Coast’s defensive stability.

Chances of Advancing
Ivory Coast have been drawn in Group E alongside Germany, Ecuador, and Curacao. Germany are favourites to win the group, but the Elephants are widely viewed as strong contenders for second place. Their experience, athleticism, and attacking talent should give them an advantage over Ecuador and Curacao. If they maintain the form that saw them conquer Africa, Ivory Coast have a realistic chance of reaching the knockout stages and could emerge as one of the tournament’s surprise packages. Advancing to the Round of 32 appears well within their reach.
