Marc Guehi expressed pride after playing a key role in Manchester City’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool, a result that ended the club’s 23-year wait for a league win at Anfield in front of supporters.
The England international, who was born in Abidjan, delivered a composed defensive performance on Sunday night as City overcame intense pressure to secure a significant Premier League triumph.
The win not only strengthened City’s title ambitions but also marked a historic moment for travelling supporters who witnessed the club’s first such success at the famous ground since 2003.
Guehi, who came close to joining Liverpool during the summer transfer window, produced an assured display at the heart of City’s defence.
Tasked with containing Liverpool’s dangerous attacking unit, the centre-back showed positional awareness, strength in duels and calmness in possession, helping City maintain structure during Liverpool’s sustained spells of pressure.
His performance highlighted why the defender has become a trusted figure in Pep Guardiola’s backline, particularly in high-stakes fixtures.
Reflecting on the occasion, Guehi paid tribute to the travelling supporters whose vocal presence provided motivation throughout the contest. The defender acknowledged the significance of the result for fans who have waited decades to celebrate a league victory at Anfield while in attendance.
“Credit to the fans, they came out in numbers and supported us from the beginning right to the end,” he said in his interview with City Studios.
The 23-year-old admitted he was initially unaware of the historical context surrounding the victory but quickly appreciated its magnitude once informed.
He emphasised the emotional value of delivering such a memorable result for the supporters, particularly in a stadium widely regarded as one of the most challenging venues in English football.
“Someone said that’s the first time we’ve won here with fans since 2003. I actually didn’t know that at all,” he added.
City were forced to demonstrate resilience and tactical discipline to protect their advantage as Liverpool mounted a late push for an equaliser.
Guehi highlighted the collective determination shown by his teammates, praising the squad’s composure under pressure during the closing stages of the encounter.
“I think it’s great for them to see that and experience that. Credit to everyone for showing such resilience in such a tough game. So yeah well done to everyone.”
