Barcelona must decide Alejandro Balde’s future after defender makes stance clear

Alejandro Balde has told Barcelona he wants to remain at the club and compete for his place, leaving the Spanish side to decide whether to keep the left-back or consider a summer transfer.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Balde has made his preference clear and wants to continue at Barcelona, despite recent speculation that he had begun to accept the possibility of leaving.

The 21-year-old’s intention is to stay at Camp Nou and fight for his position rather than seek a move elsewhere. However, Barcelona have been exploring the possibility of selling him, meaning the final decision now rests with the Catalan club.

Romano said the current situation is unlikely to change before Deadline Day unless one of Europe’s leading clubs makes a significant offer for the Spain international.

Balde’s future has become the subject of increasing attention in recent days, with his representative Jorge Mendes becoming involved in discussions. Several Premier League clubs have been linked with the defender, with Manchester United among those showing the strongest interest.

Manchester United have contacted Barcelona representatives to ask about the conditions of a potential deal. The English club are looking for competition for Luke Shaw at left-back and regard Balde as one possible option for that role.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has previously spoken about the situation and praised Balde’s ability. Flick said the player possesses considerable quality, but added that he wanted to be certain Balde was convinced he could compete for his position.

The manager has also stressed the importance of having players who are fully committed to the team. Flick recently revealed that he had spoken directly to Balde and asked him to reflect on his position and future.

Balde came through Barcelona’s youth system and has established himself as a first-team left-back, but uncertainty over his role has led to speculation about a possible departure during the current summer transfer window.

For now, the player’s position is understood to be straightforward: he wants to stay and compete. Barcelona, however, retain control over whether that stance is enough to end discussions about a sale.

Balde signed a contract extension with Barcelona in September 2023. His current agreement runs until 30 June 2028 and includes a release clause worth one billion euros, giving the club significant contractual protection if another side attempts to sign him.

The situation could therefore remain unchanged until the transfer deadline, unless a major proposal from a top club persuades Barcelona to reconsider their plans.
