Crystal Palace and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta are considering knee surgery following medical concerns that derailed his proposed move to AC Milan.
The French forward was close to completing a £30 million transfer on deadline day, but the deal collapsed after the Italian club raised concerns during their medical assessment.
Reports indicate that Palace and Mateta are now evaluating whether the striker should undergo surgery to address persistent knee inflammation.
The procedure is being considered as a proactive measure, with Mateta eager to maximise his chances of being selected for France’s squad at the upcoming World Cup.
Palace were reportedly transparent with Milan throughout negotiations, providing detailed medical records relating to Mateta’s condition.
However, after conducting their own examination, Milan opted not to proceed with the transfer, citing concerns over the player’s long-term fitness.
Milan club doctor Stefano Mazzoni is understood to have assessed Mateta personally and subsequently recommended a surgical procedure to clear inflammation in the knee.
The operation is not viewed as a major intervention but could require a period of recovery that would sideline the striker temporarily.
Mateta has been an important attacking option for Palace, and the club are now balancing his immediate availability with long-term fitness considerations. The decision on surgery is expected to be made following further medical consultations.
