MC Alger head coach Rulani Mokwena has voiced his frustration with the club’s subdued activity in the transfer market after his call for reinforcements went largely unanswered.
The Algerian giants made just one signing during the recently closed window, bringing in attacking midfielder Chahreddine Boukholda from MC Oran.
Mokwena had hoped for more additions, with Al Ittihad midfielder Sidi Bouna Amar among the players reportedly on his wishlist, but no further deals materialised before the deadline.
Speaking after MC Alger’s 2-0 victory over Saint-Éloi Lupopo in the CAF Champions League, the South African tactician cut a subdued figure, admitting disappointment while reaffirming his commitment to the squad at his disposal.
“As a coach, regardless of what we have, in the end I will be judged on the results, so I have to live and die by this responsibility,” Mokwena told the media.
“Whether we brought in four or five new players, or whether the squad stays the same like now, I have incredible confidence in the squad for the challenges that we have until the end.
“This is the only thing I will say with regards to the Mercato [transfer window], and I don’t know if you see it in my face, I don’t look like the happy Mokwena that you’ve seen for many of your press conferences.
“And even after a good performance and a good result, I should be a little bit happier. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult. But we will fight until the end. That is our responsibility and zero excuses.”
Mokwena has already enjoyed early success in Algeria, guiding MC Alger to the Super Cup, while the team currently sits top of the domestic league standings. The 39-year-old coach also remains in contention for a place in the CAF Champions League knockout stage, with MC Alger third in their group.
