Abdoulaye Kanté has returned to French football after AS Saint-Étienne confirmed the signing of the Ivory Coast midfielder on loan during the winter transfer window.
The 20-year-old joins the Ligue 2 side from Middlesbrough, having only arrived in England last summer from ESTAC Troyes.
Saint-Étienne announced the deal on Friday, revealing Kanté will remain at the club until 30 June 2026, with an option to make the move permanent.
Kanté, who developed through the youth ranks at Montfermeil FC, said the club’s sporting ambitions and the trust shown by the coaching staff played a decisive role in his decision to move.
“I am very happy to be here. Saint-Étienne is a great club, with a strong history and passionate fans. When the opportunity arose, I didn’t hesitate for long.”
He added that early discussions with the technical team gave him clarity about his responsibilities on the pitch and reassurance about his place in the squad.
“They told me about the role I could play in the team.
They explained what was expected of me on the field. It’s important for a young player to feel that confidence. I’m here to learn, improve, and help the team.”
Saint-Étienne are currently fifth in Ligue 2 and remain firmly involved in the race for promotion to the top flight. Kanté acknowledged the challenge ahead and insisted he is ready to compete for his place.
“I know that nothing is guaranteed. I will work hard every day to earn my place. I want to show my qualities, but above all, bring energy, speed, and determination.”
The move offers the Attécoubé-born midfielder the chance for increased game time after making just five appearances for Middlesbrough this season, including four in the Championship.
Kanté described the loan spell as a key stage in his development and expressed a clear focus on steady progress.
“This is an important step for me. Playing in France, in a demanding league, will help me grow. My goal is simple: to improve match after match and give my all for this jersey.”
Despite the temporary nature of the switch, Kanté remains under contract with Middlesbrough until June 2030 and is currently valued at €3m, according to Transfermarkt.
Saint-Étienne’s next Ligue 2 fixture is against Montpellier HSC on Matchday 22, as the club continues its push towards promotion.
