Katsina United new signing Chinedu Ozor wakes up in mortuary after being declared dead

Nigerian footballer Chinedu Ozor has regained consciousness after being declared dead and taken to a mortuary following a medical emergency during a pre-season friendly between Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes.

Ozor collapsed during the match and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where a doctor reportedly confirmed his death. He was subsequently taken to a mortuary, but staff were left stunned after noticing movement from the player.

The former Heartland player was immediately taken back to Katsina General Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, where doctors are now working to stabilise his condition.

Heartland confirmed the dramatic development in a social media update, saying: “Reliable sources say Chinedu Ozor has been moved from the mortuary to the hospital after reportedly showing signs of movement.

“He is currently on oxygen as medics work to revive him.”

Katsina had already announced his death

The extraordinary turn of events came after Katsina United had officially announced Ozor’s death following the incident during the friendly.

“We mourn the tragic passing of our newly signed player Chinedu Ozor following a medical emergency during today’s friendly match against Niger Tornadoes.

“Our thoughts, prayers and strength are with his family and loved ones. Rest on Warrior.”

Katsina press officer Nasir Gide also explained the circumstances surrounding the initial declaration, saying Ozor had been pronounced dead by a doctor after being taken to a nearby hospital.

“When we rushed him to a nearby hospital, he was confirmed dead by a doctor. We collected a police report and took him back to Katsina General Hospital, where he was also said to be dead.”

Nigerian football rallies around Ozor

News of Ozor’s condition has prompted an outpouring of concern across Nigerian football, with clubs and supporters hoping for his recovery.

Rivers United manager Okey Kpalukwu extended his sympathies following the initial report of Ozor’s death.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones and to the management, players, staff and supporters of Katsina United.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Nigerian football family during this difficult time.”

Ozor is now receiving intensive medical care, with his condition being closely monitored after the remarkable discovery that he was still alive.
