Mozambique will part ways with coach Chiquinho Conde after his contract expires this Saturday, the Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) has confirmed, despite the former striker guiding the national team past the AFCON group stage for the first time in Morocco.
The FMF said it will not seek to renew Conde’s deal and has already begun the process of appointing a new head coach.
The decision followed a federation meeting on Wednesday that assessed the team’s recent performances and considered the possibility of extending Conde’s tenure.
Vice president Gervásio de Jesus revealed that Conde, who was invited to the meeting, did not attend.
“This was one of the essential points, aimed at analyzing and assessing the performance of the national team during the competition and other very important aspects related to infrastructure and the preparation of our teams for participation in COSAFA competitions.
“We informed the national coach about the expiration of his employment contract.”
De Jesus left the door open for a potential return, describing Conde, 60, as a free agent.
“From this moment on, Chiquinho is a free agent, and the federation is also free to take any position regarding this process. We are not putting pressure on ourselves.
“We will reflect in the coming days, looking at the pressing needs of a strategic plan that we propose to carry out,” De Jesus added.
Conde, who has been in charge since October 2021, led Mozambique to consecutive AFCON finals in Ivory Coast and Morocco and had last renewed his contract in August 2024.
