Michael Carrick struck an optimistic note over Patrick Dorgu’s condition after the Danish winger was forced off during Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.
The Danish international of Nigerian descent was one of the defining figures of the contest in north London, producing a moment of brilliance to score before later departing with what appeared to be a hamstring issue.
United’s win owed much to Dorgu’s relentless energy and attacking threat, particularly down the flank, where his combination play and athleticism repeatedly unsettled Arsenal’s defensive shape.
His goal, spectacular in both execution and timing, underlined a growing influence in Carrick’s side and capped another eye-catching performance in a demanding fixture.
The only concern for United came late in the game when Dorgu was withdrawn after pulling up in discomfort. While the immediate sight raised alarm bells, Carrick was keen to emphasise that there is no definitive diagnosis yet and stressed the importance of patience before drawing conclusions.
Speaking after the match, the United manager highlighted Dorgu’s wider contribution beyond his goals.
He said: “Pat’s been a big player for us, obviously he’s scored two goals but in terms of the threat and athleticism and quality, he’s been immense down the side with Luke (Shaw) against two teams that ask a lot of questions.
“I am delighted for him because the two goals he’s scored are very different goals. It’s nice to see him smiling and happy.
“He obviously came off with, hopefully, a little bit of cramp, hopefully, it’s nothing worse.
“At this stage, it’s hard to tell, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”
Medical assessments will now determine whether Dorgu’s substitution was merely precautionary or something more serious.
