Egyptian forward Mahmoud Hassan, popularly known as Trezeguet, has pledged that the Pharaohs will fight to secure the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following their semi-final loss to Senegal.
The record eight-time AFCON champions saw their title hopes dashed after a 1-0 defeat to the Lions, leaving them to face Nigeria in the third-place match on Saturday.
“We did our best but luck wasn’t on our side, and that’s football,” he told the press.
“We played to win the title, which was our goal from the beginning of the tournament, and everyone did their best, whether players or coaching staff led by Hossam Hassan.”
Acknowledging the challenge ahead, the Al Ahly forward described Nigeria as a strong opponent with quality players, but insisted Egypt will fight for a podium finish.
Trezeguet also dismissed suggestions of any on-field tension with Senegalese players during the semi-final.
“We gave it our all, but we couldn’t qualify due to a lack of luck. I thank the technical, administrative, and medical staff for the long training camp the team has been going through since arriving in Cairo until the end of the journey tomorrow,” he added.
