Reinildo Mandava has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end a long and influential spell with the Mozambique national team at the age of 31.
The left-back confirmed his decision on January 13, 2026, choosing to step away from the Mambas after more than a decade of consistent service.
His departure marks a significant moment for Mozambican football, as one of its most dependable and combative figures leaves the international stage after years of commitment and leadership.
Mandava built his international journey on durability and loyalty. Born in Beira on January 21, 1994, he earned his first senior cap in December 2013, beginning a national team career that stretched across ten years.
From his earliest appearances, he imposed himself through discipline, physical strength, and relentless energy down the left side.
Coaches relied on his ability to balance defensive solidity with attacking support, while teammates drew confidence from his presence.
Over the course of his career with Mozambique, Mandava collected more than 50 caps and scored five goals, an impressive return for a defender.
He featured in multiple qualification campaigns and represented the Mambas on Africa’s biggest stage, including the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 2025 edition ultimately served as his final appearance in national colours.
Mandava’s club career reflected a steady rise shaped by perseverance. He began his professional journey at Ferroviário da Beira before continuing his development at GD Maputo.
European football soon beckoned, leading him to Portugal and Benfica. Although he started with the reserve side, loan spells at Sporting da Covilhã and Belenenses SAD helped him gain valuable experience and maturity.
His career reached a new level in France with LOSC Lille. After joining in 2019, Mandava quickly claimed a starting role and played a crucial part in the club’s historic 2020–2021 Ligue 1 title triumph.
His performances drew praise for tactical intelligence, defensive reliability, and consistency at the highest level.
In January 2022, Mandava joined Atlético Madrid, where he adapted to the demands of La Liga and European competition.
He later continued his journey in England with Sunderland, further underlining the breadth of his European experience.
Mandava describes his international retirement as a deliberate and timely decision, one that allows Mozambique to prepare for the future and create space for a new generation.
His exit leaves behind a powerful legacy defined by professionalism, resilience, and unwavering dedication.
